cookies

I've been pretty busy this past week trying to finish the legal budget for my former company (I'm currently temping there but mainly working from home). In between drafts, I've been trying to come up with some cookie recipes to try for the cookie exchange party Eva and I are hosting later this week.

So far I have tested two new recipes, and they are both a bust. The first is called "Marbled Cookies" or something like that, and looked promising and interesting because one of the ingredients is sour cream. I got the recipe from one of my online mom's groups, and the poster said she makes them all the time and they're great. Well, either I made them wrong or I've got a vastly different opinion on what makes a great cookie, because they were less than great. A lot less. I'll still be looking for a sour cream cookie recipe (surely there are some good ones out there), especially since I have most of a container of sour cream left over.

The second recipe is called "Mystery Cookies" because its origin is a mystery. I found the recipe on a scrap of paper in a small metal tin in a box in the garage a couple of years ago. I've been meaning to try the recipe ever since, and this seemed like a good opportunity to do so. My guess is they're chocolate spritz cookies. Which would be fine, except I made them in the shape of small balls (expecting them to spread out and flatten a bit) instead of stars, flowers, and trilobites. Oops! Spritz cookies are ok, and these aren't bad. But I had hoped for something a little more interesting from a mysterious recipe. Guess not.

I will almost certainly make "3 Ginger Cookies" for the party, if I can manage to avoid being sick while assembling them. A former colleague gave me the recipe several years ago when she was pregnant, explaining that they were good for reducing nausea (due to the high ginger content). I've made them several times before, around Christmas, and used to really like them. Unfortunately, I seem to have developed an aversion to molasses during this pregnancy, and when I made them a couple of months ago I couldn't eat more than one before deciding they were disgusting. Even the thought of molasses makes me feel funny, so it should be an interesting baking experience. At least I won't be tempted to eat any of the cookies I should be giving away.

You could make vanilla cookies with chocolate sour cream frosting. Or vanilla cookies with tomato soup. Or zucchini cookies. Or cameo cookies -- chocolate cookies topped with profiles of your friends in white marzipan. Come on, use your imagination!
