Christmas photos

Lexi took an extra long 45 minute nap today, so I was able to grab some photos off my camera. All from Christmas in Napa.

What does his computer do, exactly?

It's a Linux box, so pretty much anything a computer can do (web browser, some programming, basic word processing, games, etc). There are some games on it that Elliot can play (concentration/memory type games), and he's getting practice at using a mouse.

The laptop is the one created by the "One Laptop Per Child" initiative: http://www.olpc.com/

It has wirelress networking, a web browser, a couple of simple programming languages, three USB ports, a built-in video camera and microphone, a sealed weather-resistant keyboard and a special LCD screen that can be used in direct sunlight.

It was created for children in third-world countries. Elliot's came with an AC adapter, but the ones shipped in Africa are shipped with solar cells, because many of the kids don't have electricity at home.

The laptop is obviously overkill given Elliot's age, but they are running a "give one get one" donation program, so half of the price I paid may result in a child in a third world country building some information technology skills.

That said, Elliot can already turn it on, plug in a USB mouse and play a simple card-matching memory game -- so he may master it faster than expected.
