Collision detection

Gary's article on collision detection has been published! It is part of "Game Programming Gems 7", a collection of articles on various aspects of computer game programming. I helped proofread it, but I can't say I understand it well.

His website, XenoCollide.com, is up now, too.

I've heard that it's well known among authors that the first page an author views in a fresh publication will always contain an error.

My own experience didn't contradict this theory. Apparently, the editing process is all about making something as perfect as possible so that sadistic publishers have more to damage. :)

On its way from my computer to the printed page, several more rounds of creative editing took place. Equations were changed -- redundant words were added -- commas were repositioned -- separate lines were merged -- that sort of thing.

I haven't read the entire article myself yet, but it's not quite the same work I submitted. Still, I'm happy to be published, even if it isn't perfect.

Gary, now you know about the concept of de-editing, which is not always possible but often desirable. Copy editors (not me, of course!) just feel they have to change things or they're not earning their keep. So they improve things. You have to try to get a chance to de-edit, but as a first-time contributor, you're unlikely to get that chance.

Also, there is a variety of typo that hides until something is in print. Doesn't matter how many people check it first -- the typo implants itself when no one is looking.
