self portrait

Yesterday evening, while I was feeding dinner to Lexi, Elliot announced that he was going to draw a picture of himself. Actually, what he said was, "I'm going to draw a picture of me!"

And so he did.

Not bad for a 2 1/2 year old.

One day they can't draw and the next day they can. Seeing these sudden developmental leaps fills me with wonder and awe.

Wow! And with that, Elliot has surpassed my 29 years of artistic development.

Deceptively childlike. He's undoubtedly doing it on purpose.

Where are the ears? Ask him what he did with his ears! He is not permitted to lose his ears. When I was his age I had three of them.

And he did it on an "etch a sketch"--that is impressive!

No, I think it's just a magic slate.

Interesting. But he's got to wait to at least 40 before losing all that hair.

Looks like Elliot has the family's artistic genes. Bet Picasso could not draw that good when he was three years old.

If that is hair at the top of the head he is definitely advanced. Take it from someone who has spent a good deal of time counting the parts of children's drawings of themselves.

He drew the picture on a Magnadoodle, which uses a magnetic pen on a special slate. We limit the use of crayons right now, at least while unsupervised.

I think the "hair" was just a stray mark, not intentional; I don't recall him telling me about the hair when he was describing the picture. But this weekend he drew a bunch of pictures of other people (mostly Grandpa Gary, I think), complete with eyes with pupils, hair, and a beard on one (at least, that was his description as he was drawing).
