sleeping

Elliot has been insisting on going to bed with the light on for the past week or so. This means I get to go into his room every night after he falls asleep and turn off the light and take a peek at him. Last night he was just too cute.

dairy intolerance

We took Elliot to his 2 year checkup today (he's 40th percentile for height and 10th percentile for weight, and overall very healthy) and asked the pediatrician about Lexi's dairy intolerance. The good news: she'll most likely outgrow it by the time she's a year old. The bad news: I've really got to keep off dairy until then.

According to our pediatrician, dairy intolerance is not like a normal allergy, it is a gastrointestinal sensitivity, so it isn't easy to test for it (e.g. you won't show up in a skin test). It's also different from being lactose intolerant, it's an allergy to cow milk proteins, not lactose (which is a sugar). There is more information about it here.

I had a little bit of ranch dressing on Saturday. Now, three days later, Lexi seems to be back to normal. The ped recommended I try dairy again when we start her on solids, which will be in about 3 months. In the meantime I've got a box of rice milk in the fridge, waiting for me to try it. I've also found some tasty vegan chocolate chip cookies at Trader Joe's, and I've been making (and eating) a lot of banana bread and zucchini bread, so it's not all bad.

dairy update

I've been off dairy for nearly 4 weeks; Lexi seems to be doing a lot better because of it. I saw a lactation consultant on Friday, who suggested I try introducing some dairy to see how Lexi reacts. So yesterday we went out to eat and I had some ranch dressing. Five hours later she was spitting up much more than usual. This still doesn't confirm that Lexi has a dairy intolerance, but it's one more data point that suggests that she does.

(Side note: Lexi is 3 months old today, and weighed 13lbs 8oz this morning!)

Elliot sings

Two videos I took this evening of Elliot and I singing songs.
Elliot sings "B-I-N-G-O."

Elliot improvises a little here.

Elliot's birthday cake

A video showing Elliot blowing out the candles on his birthday cake.

And here he is having his cake and eating it, too.

Lexi and the Winkle

A quick video I took a few days ago.

We've had house guests galore for the past two weeks (first our friends Vladimir and Cornelia, sans children, visited for a few days from Switzerland, then my mom was here, then my sister Alana crashed in the office for a week before her apartment subletter left.) We had a small birthday party for Elliot; I've got a video of him and his birthday cake that I'll try to upload today. Yesterday I went to a friend's baby shower while Gary and Elliot went to a surprise birthday party for another friend (Lexi and I joined them later, but it got cold and late so we came home before it ended). Gary left this morning for a short trip to Seattle; he'll be back Tuesday night. Meanwhile Elliot's been playing with the cheese grater, tape measure, and other various kitchen objects he's been finding.

I am still off dairy and Lexi seems to be doing well as a result. We still don't know for certain that she has a dairy intolerance, but it looks likely that she's intolerant to something I'm eating. I'll ask the pediatrician next week when we go in for Elliot's annual checkup.

Elliot is Two

Elliot is two years old today, but if you ask him he says he is five. Sometimes four, but usually five.

So far his biggest accomplishment at this new age is that he pooped in the toilet this evening before bed.
